Get Aggressive With Residual Herbicides in Soybeans

August 03, 2022

In soybean fields, growers know a soil-residual herbicide in their herbicide program can help them achieve cleaner fields. In developing PREVIEW™ 2.1 SC herbicide, UPL experts say being aggressive about clean fields is the first step in obtaining higher yields.

“The best advice I can give growers for planning their next soybean crop is to be aggressive on weed control,” says Kip Jacobs, UPL Midwest Technical Services Manager. “We can help retailers and growers design very aggressive pre-emergent programs with residual control that extends through the early growing season, which sets growers up to be successful no matter what their soybean trait package might be. The more aggressive your pre-emergent herbicide program is, the more successful that post-emergent herbicide application will be as well.”

According to Aaron Hager, University of Illinois Extension Weed Specialist, residual herbicides are important components for integrated weed management programs. Reducing the number of weeds exposed to post-emergent foliar-applied herbicides helps reduce the selection intensity for weeds resistant to those herbicides, reducing the risk of developing herbicide resistance. One of the most respected products in soybean programs is PREVIEW 2.1 SC. Applied pre-emergence, PREVIEW 2.1 SC herbicide provides residual control of even the most devastating resistant broadleaf weeds in soybean fields.

“The more aggressive your pre-emergent herbicide program is, the more successful your post-emergent herbicide application will be as well,” says Kip Jacobs, UPL Midwest Technical Services Manager.

PREVIEW 2.1 SC herbicide contains a precisely loaded 2:1 ratio of metribuzin (Group 5) and sulfentrazone (Group 14) to deliver a highly efficacious weed management foundation with exceptional crop safety. This formulation offers a higher concentration of active ingredients than competitors.

“Metribuzin is known to be one of the most effective AIs against waterhemp,” Jacobs says. “Growers will appreciate the convenient liquid formulation, a user-friendly use rate and its ability to be used in both conventional and traited soybean production systems.”

With multiple modes of action, PREVIEW 2.1 SC herbicide controls weed pressures on soybean acres plagued by the most devastating resistant weed species including Palmer amaranth, pigweed and waterhemp.

How PREVIEW 2.1 SC Herbicide Fits in Soybean Programs

“In terms of resistance traits in soybeans, there's an increasing number of trait packages out there, and that can cause quite a bit of confusion when designing an herbicide program,” Jacobs says. “PREVIEW 2.1 SC herbicide is extremely versatile and effective for production systems, regardless of the resistance traits.”

In conventional or traited soybean systems such as LibertyLink®, Enlist E3™ or XtendFlex® soybeans, growers can incorporate PREVIEW 2.1 SC into their pre-emergence program to fit whatever the troublesome weed population of that acre may be.

“With PREVIEW 2.1 SC herbicide, we can tailor-fit the growers’ herbicide program to have a superior residual pre-emergence across all traits, and even conventional soybean varieties,” Jacobs says. PREVIEW 2.1 SC herbicide may be tank-mixed with various groups of herbicides to enhance control across the weed species spectrum. Tank-mix partners must be used in accordance with the label restrictions and precautions. Label rate structures should be followed to ensure stewardship and best management practices.

  • For winter annual weeds or other emerged weeds, add the label-recommended rate of 2,4-D dicamba or glyphosate-based products to PREVIEW 2.1 SC herbicide.
  • For heavy large-seeded broadleaf pressure, the addition of an ALS inhibitor (i.e., cloransulam, chlorimuron ethyl) can limit selection pressure of PREVIEW 2.1 SC herbicide active ingredients
  • Group 15 herbicide such as S-metolachlor will provide increased residual control of grasses and additional residual of small-seeded broadleaf weeds. (i.e., amaranth, lambsquarters, etc.).
